The Origin Story

Every great journey begins with a simple, creative spark. For CalcQuest, that spark was ignited during Arin Agrawal's very first semester of college. What initially started as a fun, experimental side project quickly evolved into something much larger.

Arin built the very first version of CalcQuest in just two weeks and officially released it on September 3, 2024. At launch, the game featured 135 handmade levels. However, an unexpected problem quickly arose—players would binge through all the levels, finish the game, and then uninstall the app. This was creating deadly churn for the app's growth.

To combat this, an additional 250 levels were added. Yet, the outcome was exactly the same: dedicated players would complete the new levels and eventually churn once more.

Realizing that a fixed number of levels would never be enough to satisfy the most engaged players, a major pivot was made to introduce endless, procedurally generated puzzles. This single shift transformed the entire experience, resulting in crazy retention rates and keeping players continually engaged without ever running out of challenges.

In the beginning, CalcQuest had absolutely no marketing budget. Arin started marketing it strictly through word of mouth. Thanks to the highly addictive endless mechanics and the polished, premium feel, the app began to spread organically.

Today, CalcQuest has grown far beyond a simple first-semester project. It is now played organically by users across 150+ countries around the world, continually expanding to be what we see today.
